Memories of Dad

I remember my father as being a dedicated and loving family man. In the early years of my childhood, I can remember asking him "daddy can I go" referring to the times I would bug him about going along with him to his job. On occasion he would allow me the pleasure. The first job I can remember accompanying him on was the ole Town Pavilion Motel located in downtown Macon,Ga. and there was many after that.

Once during the time my mother was ill she had paddled me for bad behavior. She was so weak from cancer the whipping did not hurt and I laughed at her (very BIG mistake) because I knew what was coming next. You guested it, when daddy came home from work she told him what had occurred and I can honestly say the whipping I got from daddy wasn't funny. In fact that was the worst spanking in my life, needless to say I never laughed at my mother again.

I use to love visiting Grandma's house, Daddy and I would walk behind the house a ways until we would come to the old sawmill. He used to like rummaging thru what was left of a old storage room where there was a lot of rusted old tools. He would always pick up a tool and ask me if I knew what the tools name was and what it was used for, and of course I would have no idea. He knew the name and purpose of every tool. I just loved being in his company and exploring the ole ruins. Nothing better than a young boy hanging out with his daddy.

Once I reached my late teens I needed a job so daddy got me a job with the same construction company he worked for. I never saw him yell, cuss or disrespect anyone but he always managed to get his point across to everyone. He was respected by all and deservedly so. I know he graduated from high school but I don't recall if he ever attended any college courses. Maybe I'm a little biased but I think he was the smartest man I've ever known.
