The Leverette's Genealogy Pages
History of Jeff's & Renee's families
This is the story of the deaths and burials of my paternal grandfather Henry Calvin Leverett and maternal grandfather Asa Jackson Stephenson. They both died and were buried in December 1935. My conclusion is compiled by information from death certificates and word of mouth. I have no concrete proof, all I have is speculation at this point and it makes perfect sense to me.
Except for passing away at a early age there was nothing out of the ordinary surrounding the death of my paternal grandfather Henry Calvin Leverett (pictured on left) who passed away on 18 Dec 1935 from pneumonia. His death certificate list the cause of death as lobar pneumonia. Henry Calvin was buried on 19 Dec 1935, the very next day after his death which was a commom practice of the day, either the same day as death or next day after. He was interred at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pavo, Thomas County, Georgia.
My maternal grandfather Asa Jackson Stephenson's (pictured on right) death is somewhat different and where the story gets bizarre. He too died at a early age. The story that was told to me originally was that Asa Jackson died in a automobile accident after leaving Henry Calvins funeral and that was all I knew. After doing some research I discovered a few more details.
Here is what I surmised by my research, Asa Jackson died from the car accident, just not on the same day as the accident. What I believe is, after Asa Jackson left Henry Calvin's funeral, Asa went back to work as a rural mail carrier and during his route his car skidded off the road. It was December at the time and there might of been some "black ice" on the road, what ever the reason, Asa's car went off the road and down a steep embankment and partially submerged in a creek on the 19th of December. There was a search conducted and Asa was discovered alive on the 20th of December still in the partially submerged car. Asa's injuries were extensive and according to his death certificate, Asa died on 22 Dec 1935 from injuries sustained in the accident, specifically a crushed thorax which means in layman's term a crushed chest cavity. Asa Jackson Stephenson was interred on 23 Dec 1935 in the same cemetery as Henry Calvin Leverett, Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Pavo, Thomas County, Georgia.
